Kale Smoothies

The Victoria Secret Fashion Show is less than a month away. In honor of my absolute favorite fashion show of all time, I have decided that I will include more ab-friendly recipes on here. I am not a nutrionist by any stretch of the imagination, but I can venture a guess that eating more nutrient packed foods is probably better for your abs than say, my usual salted caramel ice cream and medium rare burgers.

I am currently not doing a very good job of maintaining a healthy, balanced diet, so I have googled ways to incorporate as many veggies into one meal as possible.  Ah-ha! Smoothies! I have started swapping in these kale smoothies in place of my usual oatmeal for breakfast. I get an extra serving or two of veggies and fruits in the morning even before I've checked my email and updated my instagram feed! Yay!

Fresh, healthy kale from Trader Joe's. Perhaps one of my most favorite things on this planet!

Kale Smoothie, recipe adapted from here

Ingredients
  • 1 handful kale leaves, removed from stems
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 tsp. chocolate whey powder
  • 1 banana
  • 2-3 handfuls strawberries or mixed berries
  • 2 tsp. almond butter
  • 1 tbsp. flaxseed (or chia seeds! Chia seeds sound cute, like chia pets, so I'll pick some up next time and let you guys know how it goes)
Place all ingredients in your blender. Blend for about a minute. If you put enough berries in, it won't even be green!

I try to blend this up right before running out the door to spin class, putting it in a blender bottle and toting it to work. I usually leave my apartment at 6am, and get into work at 8:30am and it all appears to look fine / taste fine / not go bad after sitting in my gym bag for about 2 1/2 hours.

Thanks for the smoothie inspiration! I've been meaning to try this, but don't have the equipment for it... yet. What blender do you use? I'm tempted to go with a single-serve blender, but the ones on Amazon (Magic Bullet included) seem kind of cheap/gimmicky.

@Amanda, I just use a normal blender from bed, bath and beyond! Nothing fancy at all.
